There is a Nursery to Grade 9 school with a population of approximately 200 students and a nursing station providing medical care. Fishing, hunting and trapping continue to have both economic and cultural importance. In their free time, people living here like to hold dogsled races and fishing derbies. There is only one store in the community, The Northern, but it carries a broad range of items. Take-out pizza is available through a small family business. Brochet is about 1 hour's flight north of Thompson, situated on the shore of Reindeer Lake, near the Saskatchewan border. The terrain is generally flat with sandy soil and rocky outcrops; the predominant trees are birch, spruce, pine and tamarack. There is an abundance of wildlife, such as snowshoe hares, caribou, grouse and foxes. There is no year round road to Brochet, but there are regular scheduled flights from Thompson. During the winter, it can be reached by a winter road. Brochet is located about one hour's flight north of Thompson, approximately 7 hours' drive by the winter road.
